These adorable paper mache boxes, complete with lace ribbon & silk flowers, are simple, yet sophisticated craft, is made from recycled newspapers in the little village of Mahawara, Kasmir India. Using simple tools and techniques these boxes are created. The process of making paper mache is tedious and time consuming. Recycled newspapers are soaked in large barrels with water and rice starch. After 21 days the papers would have decomposed, then they are molded in boxes and left to dry further. Once completely dried they are individually hand-painted with detailed images, thus one of a kind. Then four layers of clear lacquer are hand rubbed over each piece to reveal a rich luster.
